Infrared sensing application market will be much bigger in the year 2022

18-01-2022
According to some international market reports, it is expected that infrared sensing applications will find more and more market share in the market shares of Eye Tracking and 3D Sensing for Metaverse,Under Display Proximity Sensor,Bio-Sensing- Photoplethysmography (PPG),In-Cabin Sensing- Driver Monitoring System (DMS) / Occupant Monitoring System (OMS),ADAS / Autonomous Driving- Automotive LiDAR and Industrial LiDAR and Hyperspectral Imaging for Industrial Automation.

Facing the rise of metaverse in 2021, more and more manufacturers have put more attention to developing AR and VR products. The quick rendering in eye tracking can create real, intuitive visual experiences to improve immersion, and enable lifelike operation. More and more new business opportunities will arise from 3D sensing combined with 5G transmission and AR function with gesture control.

The manufacturers are planning to introduce SWIR light source into under display proximity sensor in order to reduce sunlight and ambient light interference, by improving transmission rate and screen-to-body ratio.

SWIR wavelengths range from 1,050-2,500 nm, which covers optical properties of compounds such as water, sugar, and alcohol. AirPods 3 has successfully introduce PPG (photoplethysmography) technology to improve in-ear detection mechanism based on skin-detect sensors.

With maturing algorithm, wearable devices will feature in PPG-based bio-sensing functions, which can measure not only heart rate and blood oxygen levels, but also other variables including body hydration as well as blood glucose, blood lipid, and blood alcohol levels.

Starting from 2022, the European Union also plans to mandate DMS in new cars in 2022. The US National Transportation Safety Board also recommends installing a DMS to partially autonomous vehicles. Chinese national standard “Taxonomy of Driving Automation for Motor Vehicles” requires that vehicles with autonomous driving Level 3 must be able to recognize when it can take over driving. DMS and OMS will be first installed in passenger and commercial logistic vehicles.

Until now, major Car makers have begun DMS / OMS installations, such as  Audi, BMW, General Motors, Ford, Mazda, Infiniti (Nissan), Lexus (Toyota), Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru, Volkswagen, Volvo, Maxus, Great Wall Motors, BORGWARD, Geely, Hyundai, Jeep, etc. Also, Tesla will place a DMS / OMS in the rearview mirrors of its Model 3 in 2022.

The current car models from Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Honda have been equipped with Valeo LiDAR sensors. BMW has adopted the LiDAR products of Innoviz to its iNEXT series. Lexus has applied the LiDAR sensors of Continental and Denso to its autonomous driving L3. In the year 2022, Volvo will introduce long-range LiDAR technologies to highway driving, while Hyundai will announce the Genesis G90 featuring LiDAR. Further, Chinese new energy car makers prefer introducing LiDAR to ADAS and autonomous driving L3. LiDAR sensors are considered a must for autonomous driving L4 and L5.

Automotive LiDAR sensors are also installed in autonomous busses, Robo-taxies, and autonomous trucks featuring autonomous driving L4 and L5. These vehicles are developed for road shuttle and point-to-point transport . Major manufacturers of Robo-taxies include Waymo, Cruise, and Argo AI. Waymo provides autonomous driving services mainly in Phoenix. Cruise has been recently approved to run Robo-taxies across California, whereas Argo AI intends to launch Robo-taxi services in Miami and Austin of Texas.

Because of labor shortage problems during the covid-19 pandemic, the development of industrial automation is becoming faster and faster in European, American, and Chinese markets. In order to make more cost-effective and efficient last mile delivery, more and more e-commerce and delivery companies are turning more to delivery robots.

Based on SWIER LED technology with InGaAs cameras, Hyperspectral imaging can achieve sorting and examining different materials according to their optical properties with detection accuracy and speed.Hyperspectral imaging can improve automation quality greatly to reduce the workload and operation expenses.
