What requirements are there when LED strobe beacon lights or LED auxiliary lights enter North America market

Basically, LED strobe beacon lights or other types of LED auxiliary lights are not within the compulsory regulations of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSSs) and The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in accordance with Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 49 Part 571.108. However, this does not mean " universal" for high way driving because of different layers of federal,state and local law requirements.

In terms of federal requirement,there is an overriding provision from NHTSA that must be considered when thinking of the addition, modification or combination of any lighting beyond the requirements/provisions of FMVSS 108. S6.2.1 that writes "no additional lamp, reflective device, or other motor vehicle equipment is permitted to be installed on vehicles that impairs the effectiveness of lighting equipment required by this standard."

From the view of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA),there are special provisions for flashing warning lights that are covered in CFR 49 Part 393.25(e).These requirements specifically needs “flashing warning lamps on tow trucks and commercial motor vehicles transporting oversized loads; and warning lamps on emergency and service vehicles authorized by State or local authorities”

Similar to FMCSA regulations, state or local lawa often agrees to the “use” of such strobe lighting on motor vehicles, so the vehicle owner/operator would normally be responsible for any infractions. As LED strobe lighting is typically used on emergency or other non-public vehicles, state and local governments can have more provisions for the vehicle applications in terms of colors and flashing patterns.This is to allow police departments and other such entities to customize their own vehicles, including LED strobe warning lights.

To make it simple, you need to consult with manufacturers of fire trucks,police cars or any special-purpose emergency rescue cars in north America about the compulsory certifications requirements such as needed colors, flashing patterns and strobing speed etc for the led strobe beacon warning lights before they want to buy.
